In British valves, Mazda is a historic electrical-industry brand rather than the name of a single independent factory. Its initial company context is British Thomson-Houston, usually abbreviated BTH, which also used Mazda for lamps. Identifying a Mazda-marked valve therefore requires reading the trade name together with the type and period: the same inscription can belong to different phases of British industrial organization.

The history of Mazda valves is intertwined with Edison Swan, or Ediswan, one of Britain's early makers of thermionic tubes. The Ponders End works in the Enfield area is associated with early radio-valve production; in later years Ediswan's activities became part of the BTH and then Associated Electrical Industries structure. The Mazda name appears in the manuals and products of this industrial line. As radio and then television expanded, it covered receiving valves, tubes for sets, and other electronic components while companies and production sites changed.

The continuity of the brand explains why 'Mazda' alone cannot assign a valve to a particular plant. Technical documents and markings on an individual tube are needed to distinguish Ediswan production from later industrial phases. The link with lamps must also be read carefully: the same trade name was used for different products, but that does not prove a lamp and a valve came from the same production line.

A French Mazda brand also exists in the valve industry, with a separate industrial history. This page concerns the British BTH and Ediswan brand. Confusing it with French Mazda, or with the Japanese car maker of the same name, would lead to false attributions precisely when the mark is the most visible clue on an object.
