Svetlana's history began in Saint Petersburg in 1889, in a small workshop founded by Yakov Aivaz to make paper cigarette tubes. Work later expanded to electric lamps; the name Svetlana, associated with the incandescent lamp, stayed with the enterprise as its activities moved toward electronics. The factory was nationalized in 1919. This industrial story is much longer than tube production alone and explains why the same name appears on components from very different periods and applications.

In 1928 a merger with an electrovacuum plant brought the manufacture of amplifying and generating tubes and X-ray tubes into the enterprise. A laboratory for vacuum technology was organized around the same time. On that basis Svetlana developed production spanning radio, telecommunications, industrial work and science. Alongside receiving valves one therefore finds transmitting and power tubes, microwave devices and special tubes: “radio” alone describes only part of its activity.

Documents may name the city Petrograd, Leningrad or Saint Petersburg according to their date; these do not identify three manufacturers. Plant references and later corporate forms are likewise historical contexts of the same industrial name. To understand a Svetlana tube, one needs its date, type and actual marking: the brand spans the Soviet and subsequent periods, while continuity of place does not justify treating products, departments or different times as automatically identical.
