6BY6 tube: datasheets and technical data

Explore available pinout, electrical data and related types for the 6BY6 vacuum tube.

The 6BY6 is a miniature dual-control heptode intended chiefly for television sync circuits. General Electric, RCA and Tung-Sol sheets describe it as a gated amplifier that can perform sync separation and clipping in the same stage. Grids 1 and 3 are independent and both have sharp-cutoff characteristics, so the circuit can apply two controls to the current in the same valve. Grids 2 and 4 are connected together as the screen, while grid 5 is tied to the cathode. The 6BY6 has a seven-pin miniature base and a 6.3 V, 0.3 A heater.

The manufacturers' tables distinguish class A amplifier operation from its specific use as a sync separator and clipper. For the former they give a characteristic operating point of 250 V on the plate, 100 V on the screen grids and −2.5 V on each control grid, with 6.5 mA of plate current. The transconductances to the plate differ: approximately 1,900 µS for grid 1 and 500 µS for grid 3. The stated conditions for a sync circuit are quite different, with 10 V on the plate and 25 V on the screen: figures from one application should not be transferred to another without considering the circuit.

The General Electric sheet places the 3BY6 alongside the 6BY6 and describes them as identical except for heater ratings: the 3BY6 is rated at 3.15 V and 0.6 A and is also intended for series heater strings. This comparison explains the relationship between the two designations, but the supply must be checked before substituting one type for the other.

How to use the Valve Archive

EnryLab Valve Archive allows you to search for PDF datasheets and technical documentation by entering the exact code of a vacuum tube. Enter codes such as EL84, ECC83, 12AX7, 6L6GC, or 300B to view variants, manufacturers, and documents available in the technical archive. The search uses exact matches, thus avoiding partial or irrelevant results and making it easier to find the correct datasheet.

Datasheet PDF and frequent searches

The most searched acronyms have dedicated and indexable pages, with clean URLs and linked documentation. You can start with frequent searches to quickly consult the most used valves in the audio, radio, and technical restoration fields.
